Well hey and happy weekend everyone!!
Wanted to share a super easy (instant gratification) project with you all before we run out the door for vet visits for a couple of the kids {seems to end up taking half the day}.
I've seen a couple great tutes on how to make these without power tools and on the cheap: tute
I finally decided to give it a try and I'm STOKED with how these turned out!
In the tute, she used foam wall boards. I just went to Hob Lob and got the biggest piece of foam core they had {9.99} and some craft batting {batting is PRICEY!! Maybe I'm just getting the wrong kind}.
{sorry for the iphone pics}
I measured my windows {I had already hung curtain rods and wanted to use the hangers so I measured so my cornice would attach to those}, decided how high I wanted, then I cut my foam core with a utility knife. Then, I used my first piece as a template for the 2nd piece:
Cut my sides and taped them on {YAY Duct tape!!}
This is how the piece should look after the sides are attached:
{rock on with your bad self}
Then I wrapped it in the craft batting and burlap I had on hand:
{duct taped the heck outta that bad boy}
Then, I added the nail head {to match my ballard cork boards}
I took down the existing curtain rod, but left the hangers up, then I duct taped the cornices to the rod hangers:
Here is what the windows looked like before:
And after:
I rehung the curtain panels with a couple tension rods I had in the basement. What do we think?? I'm pretty thrilled with them!!
I still need to do the large window behind the bed because I ran out of burlap. DOH!! Will get right on that Monday!
Enjoy your weekend!!
XOXOXO

Duct tape can save the world! Great job Meg :)
ReplyThey look great! And unlike some of the wooden ones I have seen, no big flat top to collect dust (I hate dusting with a passion)!

ReplySmack. Of course...foam board! I made some of these out of boards and thought I was kicking butt. I knew the whole time there should be something easier. Now I want to go make a bunch!! Thanks...I know just what needs it. By the way...thanks for linking at the Stinky Linky Party. And for being overall awesome.

I would have never thought of using foam board for this! Now I'm trying to decide which window I can do this for.

Featured this on my blog tonight...cause it's too cool!
ReplyThank you! Thank you! Thank you! I was wanting to make these, but I didn't know what foam to use. I went with plywood, which is still sitting in the carport!!! I don't have a Hobby Lobby, so I will try to find something similar elsewhere.
ReplyI love cornice boards but Im too lazy to make them. This looks easy enough. Thanks so much for sharing at Toot Your Horn Tuesday :)
Replymaybe I missed it, but how is this attached to the wall?
ReplyI adore your blue curtains. Not sure I would ever be confident enough to rock those in my house - jealous!
ReplyYou inspired me! I used your tutorial and made my own foam-board cornice :)

Thanks for sharing how it's done - love the huge impact & easiness!
Many are exploring to have their own project of cornice to beautify their place with different style,design and color.
ReplyMany Thanks again..
ReplyI will use your technique on my windows to cover the blind tops. allergies keep me from having too much fabric so - no draped. this window cornice will allow me to have some interest at my window tops.
